Who’s Going to Drive You
SELF-DRIVE CARS ARE RAPIDLY APPROACHING—
ARE YOU READY FOR THEM?
By Steve Swart
First off, let me say I don’t like to drive. I love the freedom driving provides, but I no longer like the driving part. I always cast a doubtful eye at those car commercials that show a
beautiful car on a lonely smooth road taking
graceful turns with no other cars in sight. Where
is that road actually? I suspect no one’s commute
even remotely resembles that image. My drive isn’t
bad; it doesn’t consist of open roads, but rather
many drivers who are sleepy, eating, distracted by
phones and kids ... basically lots of opportunities
for bad things to happen all around. Nope, no
quiet inviting roads going where I need to be.
Now, I love technology and really, as I previously mentioned, don’t like driving so much. When I heard that
Google was building a self-drive vehicle, I almost could
not contain my joy. I have dreamed this day would arrive.
So now every major car company and many tech giants;
Google, Ford, Tesla, and even Uber have jumped onto the
self-driven wagon. Right now, the technology is new, unproven, and only allowed in a handful of areas, but it is coming faster than you expect and will have a major impact on
your life. Self-drive vehicles will be a disruptive innovation
with implications well beyond personal transportation.
The Good Stuff
Self-Drive: Really the point of the technology. You no
longer have to watch the road. Sit back and relax, and let
the car do the driving. No more looking out for the other
