Tennessee has four well-known cities—Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville and Chattanooga—which
has its own distinctive claim to fame. But the “
Volunteer State” is also home to the Tennessee Main
Street program, one of America’s most successful
small-town revitalization efforts. So if you’re looking for a smaller scale with a bigger heart, eastern
Tennessee is a great place to start.
Begin your East Tennessee Tour near the Kentucky
border in Kingsport. Here you’ll find a welcoming
downtown with locally owned restaurants and shops,
as well as new neighborhoods in an area where the
four-season climate encourages outdoor recreations
from golf to snow skiing. Residents also enjoy regular performances by the Kingsport Theatre Guild and
Symphony of the Mountains Orchestra, plus exciting
races at the nearby Bristol Motor Speedway.
About an hour’s drive to the southwest is
Morristown, where more than a dozen city/county parks
offer leisurely walking trails and the downtown area
features charming sidewalk cafes and special-interest
museums. Most importantly for anglers, the bass,
bream and rockfish are always biting in nearby Cherokee Lake, and waterfront homes in the area range
from luxurious to pleasantly affordable.
