Sailing Through Retirement
Hannah and Brian Burtnik • The Landings on Skidaway Island • Savannah, GA
Just 10 minutes south of Savannah, GA, there is a peaceful,
arching inlet called Moon River, named a;er the iconic song
written by Savannah’s favorite son, Johnny Mercer. ;e song is
about two people expanding horizons…searching for “the same
rainbow’s end.” A ;tting sentiment for many who have chosen
this inspiring southeast coastal area to relocate or retire.
For Hannah and Brian Burtnik, life is all about expanding
horizons. ;e Burtniks retired three years ago to ;e Landings
on Skidaway Island, an embracing 4,600-acre community aptly
framed by Moon River on the west. Skidaway is the kind of tranquil place with just the right amount of shopping, medical, and
infrastructure combined with just the right amount of island vibe.
With six golf courses, ;e Landings is among the largest golf
communities in the country, but the Burtniks have hit nary a
golf ball. You will, however, ;nd Hannah on any of the community’s 34 tennis courts, and both of them training for the Savannah Century Road Race on ;e Landing’s 30 miles of walking
and bike trails. ;e couple is also active in kayaking, pickleball,
bocce ball, and even winter bowling leagues.
But their real love is sailing. ;e Burtniks belong to ;e
meet tons of new friends. Says Hannah, “We met a couple with
a 33-foot C&C sailing yacht who asked us to crew in the an-
nual Low Country Hook Ocean Race from Hilton Head Island
to Skidaway… we’re training hard and are very excited.”
;e Burtniks are also very civically active. Brian recently
completed training to become a ;rst responder on Skidaway Is-
land and is active in downtown Savannah’s Habitat for Human-
ity program. ;e couple also volunteers for the Savannah Music
Festival and other endeavors.
You will ;nd sport, history, music, and culture within Savannah, Skidaway Island, and ;e Landings – as the song goes –
such a lot of world to see.
