Kathy and Bill Weir
“You don’t have to shovel sunshine here. It’s a great part of
the country. Six years a;er retiring to the Wilmington, NC, area,
Kathy ( 62) and Bill Weir ( 63) are loving life and still seek new
adventures in this coastal town. ;e Weirs retired from Albany,
NY, in 2010, sold their home in only one day in 2011, then dove
into life in Brunswick Forest, just minutes from historic downtown Wilmington.
“Downtown Wilmington is just so appealing,” said Kathy.
“We go into downtown once a week and try new restaurants.
;ere are so many restaurants including one in a new marina
on the Cape Fear River.” ;e Weirs love seafood and barbecue
and there’s plenty of that to be found in the Wilmington area,
including Big Oak BBQ. One of their favorite restaurants is a
small Irish pub, ;e Copper Penny, where all of the bartenders
know them by name.
In their six years there, the Weirs have explored all of the area
beaches, including their favored Wrightsville Beach. In Albany,
the closest beach was three hours away, and now they go to the
beach from April through October.
“We just love all of the festivals and the theatre here,” said
Kathy. During the Azalea Festival in April every year, Kathy and
everyone is in the same boat at Brunswick Forest. ;ey are from
somewhere else, and it’s easy to make friends.”
“You can golf all year long here,” says Bill. He golfs four times
a week (down from six times) usually at Brunswick Forest’s
Cape Fear National, which he boasts to be the best course in the
area. ;ere are more than 30 courses within a 30-minute drive.
In Brunswick Forest, the Weirs are pleased to have restaurants, a ;tness center, access to doctors and dentists, as well as
walking and biking trails. Kathy has a basket on her bike to ride
to the grocery store.
“We have no regrets. We certainly don’t miss the taxes,”
said Bill. He advises others seeking to retire to a new location
to “go with the ;ow. ;ings are going to be di;erent, but you
have to embrace it.”
