now-lique;ed blockages of your meibomian (oil) glands.
;e procedure takes about 12 minutes. Price? Roger’s was a
he;y $1,200, but the e;ects may last up to two years.
Roger was sent home with the following instructions:
• Follow blinking exercises to strengthen his eyelid
muscles. By not closing completely, the pumping
action of the oil glands is a;ected, resulting in less
oil being spread over the eyes.
• Wear a reusable mask that is heated in the
microwave for ;ve minutes a day, which acts as a
warm, soothing compress.
• Use pre-moistened wipes to clean the eyelids.
• Use arti;cial tears as needed.
• Introduce additional sources of “good fats” in his
diet, like wild salmon or ;axseed oil with omega-3s.
A;er three weeks of careful adherence, Roger’s eyes are
much improved. ;ey are no longer red, water less frequent-
ly, his eyelids aren’t stuck together in the morning, and they
don’t have a “crusty” appearance. He recognizes blepharitis
and LipiFlow if/when necessary? Probably. Although the
cost is steep, the quality of life is worth it. Hopefully, these
procedures will soon be covered by insurance and/or
Medicare. We’ve heard the saying, “;e eyes are the window
to the soul.” Hopefully, these new procedures will help
people with windows that aren’t working their best.
