University of North Carolina–Wilmington (UNCW)
UNCW, located on the Southeastern coast of North Carolina,
serves the active, ‘seasoned’ 50-plus population of the region. The
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNCW continues
to expand its educational and enrichment programming. From
foreign language classes to scientific excursions, and lectures
to luncheons, OLLI draws from university faculty and regional
experts to create an expansive curriculum with something for
everyone. Peer learning societies meet weekly to enjoy speakers
and discussions.
Since 2009, OLLI has offered the Metropolitan Opera—broadcast
live in high-definition via satellite—to the community at the
UNCW campus theater. The OLLI at UNCW program catalog,
‘Pathways,’ is released twice a year in September and January.
By joining OLLI at UNCW, members enjoy significant savings
on courses and excursions. Membership levels begin at $30 per
semester, and scholarships are available. OLLI depends on a volunteer corps of members to assist and support the OLLI mission.

The Georgia Center for Continuing Education
The University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education (UGACCE)
classroom programs are on-campus in Athens, at UGA–Gwinnett in
Lawrenceville and throughout the state as well. “Many students use our
programs to change careers as well as for personal enrichment,” said
UGACCE spokesperson Annette Ogletree-McDougal. Harry Hayes, longtime
UGACCE student, said he first took beekeeping classes in the late ’70s and
now operates hives that yield honey for his use and as gifts. After retiring,
he went back to UGACCE, got certified in photography and has started in
that field as a second career. “We learn as much from each other as we do
from instructors,” Hayes said.
Online programs allow students to complete Web courses at their own
pace and on their own schedule. Distance-based courses are print-based that
you can take on your own, at your own convenience. Some courses are also
offered through DVD and VHS.
For more than 50 years, the Center’s programs have enriched lives and
advanced careers. Professional development is ideal for a new credential
or career change. Subjects include: Business, Computers, Grant Writing,
Healthcare, Home Inspection, Education, Legal, Real Estate, Skilled Trades
and Industry, Sustainable Energy and Going Green, Test Prep and Turfgrass
Management.
Delve into your creative side with personal enrichment courses that
include: drawing, painting, jewelry design, golf, language and culture, music,
