Known as the ‘Venice of America,’ Fort Lauderdale is a playground for
boaters, golfers and exclusive shopping
that has become a tourist paradise with
12 million visitors in 2012. A water taxi
tour along the inland canals gives access
to major points throughout the city.
Jai-alai and thoroughbred and harness
racing provide recreational opportunities to visitors and residents. The city
is a major yachting center, with 42,000
resident yachts and 100 marinas and
boat yards. The city’s proximity to the
Bahamas and Caribbean make it a popular yachting vacation stop. The city is
home to a vast fleet of cruise ships embarking for the Caribbean and the rest
of the world.
In the downtown area along the New
River, points of interest include the Bro-
ward Center for the Performing Arts,
the Museum of Discovery and Science,
the Museum of Arts and the historic
Stranahan House. All are within walk-
ing distance of each other. Stroll, bike or
skate along Atlantic Boulevard and the
Beach Promenade. The International
Swimming Hall of Fame is located
on Fort Lauderdale beach and houses
a large aquatic complex as well as a
museum, theater and research library.
The Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League play in suburban
Sunrise. The Florida Marlins, Miami
Dolphins and the Miami Heat all play
in neighboring Miami-Dade.
Miami’s South Beach is a playground
for celebrities and party-goers with
beautiful beaches and vast number of
condos available for rent and purchase.
Traveling south to the Keys is a one-of-a-kind experience. The 113-mile long
drive on the Overseas Highway from
mainland Florida to Key West is truly
magnificent. The Keys are an archipelago of approximately 1,700 individual
islands. Mile after mile, the bridge highway stretches across long spans of turquoise water between small tropical islands called Keys. At one point, as you’re
driving on the Seven Mile Bridge, you
can’t catch a glimpse of land in either
direction. Many of the Keys offer excellent scuba and snorkeling, plus charter
boats for deep-sea fishing.
