Lifelong Learning Opportunities
Medical Facilities
Charlottesville is served by two
area hospitals, the Martha Jefferson
Hospital, founded in 1903, and the
The University of Virginia Hospital,
a full research, teaching and patient
care center.
Green Initiatives
The city has placed an emphasis on
the use of gas-electric hybrid vehicles
and compressed natural gas, as well
as the introduction of biodiesel in all
school buses and diesel trucks.
The Charlottesville Downtown
Transit Station has been awarded the
prestigious LEED (The U.S. Green
Building Council’s Leadership in En-
ergy and Environmental Design) Gold
Environmental Certification. Much of
the material used in the building was
comprised of recycled material and
manufactured locally.
Charlottesville’s target, through an
extensive Urban Forest Management
Program, is to achieve 40 percent tree
canopy coverage.
Energy Policy
Charlottesville identified opportunities for physical and operational
improvements, which resulted in
considerably reduced consumption
of electricity, natural gas and water.
These improvements resulted in an
estimated reduction of 2,755,065
pounds of carbon dioxide.
