Located directly on the scenic Pamlico and Tar Rivers with a 3/4 mile boardwalk along its waterfront, Washington
was established in 1776. It was the first
city in the U.S. named after the first
President of the United States, George
Washington. It is known as the “Heart
of the Inner Banks” and its historic
downtown offers a variety of restaurants and retailers ranging from antique
stores to art galleries, and more. It was
the boyhood home of the great Hollywood producer Cecil B. DeMille, and
the home of the Estuarium museum.
Washington is known for the stately
homes and lovely gardens that make up
its residential area, as well as the ornate
brickwork featured on the vintage com-
mercial buildings of Main Street. Homes
of Victorian design, Arts and Crafts, and
traditional early-20th century dwellings
stand side-by-side on sidewalks lined
with crepe myrtle trees. A self-guided
historic walking tour allows visitors to
explore the neighborhoods. A farmer’s
and artisan’s market is held regularly on
the town’s green areas on the waterfront
as are special events throughout the
year. Washington features outstanding
boating and fishing along the Pam-
lico River and is 50 miles by water to
Ocracoke on the Outer Banks.
