Route #5—Aiken, SC through Augusta and on to Greensboro, GA
Aiken
Aiken, SC is filled with beautiful parkways and shaded
streets, wide double avenues and historic mansions. The city
is a horse-oriented town centering on the wild yet sophisticated sport of steeplechasing. The Aiken horse show is also
a venerable Southern tradition, along with the Aiken Trials,
which provides young horses and jockeys an opportunity
to earn their way to glory. The Aiken Bluegrass Festival is a
local sellout, but unfortunately you have to schedule your
arrival for the one day a year in the fall that it occurs.
Out of Aiken SC, drive down Highway 1( 78) through
suburban countryside, across the state border at the Savannah River, and into Augusta, GA.
Augusta
As Georgia’s second-oldest and second-largest city, Au-
gusta is full of history, atmosphere, Southern charm, and
enough activities to engage everyone’s interest. Wander to
your heart’s content along tree-lined streets, where you will
find majestic antebellum mansions and dozens of shops and
restaurants. Visit the 1886 Cotton Exchange. Stroll along the
banks of the Savannah River where, at the very popular Riv-
erwalk, there are many special events, boat races, and water
sports. Rent a canoe to paddle down the river or on the ad-
jacent Augusta Canal. Augusta is the site of the Masters Golf
Tournament, one of the premium golf events in the world
that puts the finest professional golfers through grueling
days of competition for the coveted green Masters jacket.
Greensboro
In Greensboro, GA enjoy a round of golf on one of
the area’s world-renowned courses or take a leisurely stroll
around downtown. Nearby Lake Oconee is an oasis of relaxation and recreation, and has some of the state’s best
fishing, swimming, boating, camping, picnicking, water-skiing, and golfing. Reynolds Plantation is a golf and lake community with more than 80 miles of shoreline property on
Lake Oconee. The community features a massive 117 holes
of golf from some the world’s best designers and is home
to the Ritz Carlton Lodge on Lake Oconee.
As you end one of these five road trips of a few days, a
week or more, you will arrive back home full of adventures
barely dreamed of when you departed, plus a pocket full of
memories of life on the road. |
